Discover how chartreuse wallpaper, playful pink details and carefully chosen objects can transform a hallway into one of the most memorable spaces in the home.
There is something rather wonderful about a hallway that makes you smile the moment you walk through the door. Often overlooked in favour of the rooms where we spend the most time, hallways and staircases have enormous potential to express the personality of a home. For me, they are the perfect place to be a little braver with colour.
In my own home, I recently used my Paradiso wallpaper in chartreuse to transform the hallway and staircase into a space full of character, warmth and unexpected combinations. Paired with cerise-pink woodwork, a colour matched ceiling, pale blue stair detailing and a collection of handmade and vintage decorative plates, the result is colourful, but never accidental.

It’s a look that reflects what I believe about decorating: an elegant home doesn’t have to be restrained, neutral or predictable. Colour, when used thoughtfully, can be the very thing that makes a space feel sophisticated.
The beauty of chartreuse
Chartreuse is a particularly fascinating colour. Sitting somewhere between green and yellow, it has the freshness of a spring garden and the vibrancy of sunlight. It can feel traditional or contemporary, depending on the colours and materials around it. If -just like me- yellow isn’t quite your colour- then chartreuse is definitely worth a try.
In Paradiso, chartreuse provides a wonderfully confident backdrop. The intricate pattern brings movement and detail to the walls, while the lively green-yellow shade gives the hallway an unmistakably modern feel.
I love how it changes the atmosphere of the space. Rather than simply connecting one room to another, the hallway becomes a destination in its own right.
Chartreuse also works beautifully with colours that might initially seem unexpected. Pink brings warmth and a touch of glamour, while blue introduces a cooler contrast. Together, these colours create a layered palette that feels rich, expressive and surprisingly harmonious.
Pink and green: a combination with confidence
One of my favourite elements of this hallway is the combination of chartreuse wallpaper and pink woodwork.
Pink can be incredibly sophisticated when it is used with conviction. Here, the cerise and rose tones frame the doors and mirror, giving the architectural details their own presence against the patterned walls.
Rather than trying to match every element perfectly, I prefer to let colours play off one another. A little contrast makes an interior feel alive.
The secret is not necessarily to use fewer colours. It is to choose colours that have a relationship with one another, then give each one a purpose.
Making a patterned hallway feel elegant
A bold wallpaper doesn’t need to be the only interesting thing in a room. In fact, some of the most characterful interiors are those where different patterns, textures and objects have been allowed to coexist.
In my hallway, the patterned wallpaper sits alongside blue-and-white decorative plates, ceramic lamps, flowers, framed pictures and a vintage-inspired runner. Each piece brings something different to the space.
The blue-and-white ceramics offer a familiar, almost traditional contrast to the contemporary chartreuse. The flowers soften the stronger colours, while natural wicker lighting introduces texture and warmth.
I love this mixture of old and new. An interior can feel modern without discarding the things that give a home its history. Equally, traditional decorative objects can feel entirely fresh when placed against a more contemporary colour palette.
For me, this is where the elegance lies: not in making everything match, but in creating a sense of balance between the different elements.
Why hallways are worth decorating boldly
Hallways are often narrow, awkward or short on natural light, which can make people cautious about using strong colours or patterns.
I would encourage the opposite approach.
A hallway is an opportunity to create a moment of surprise. It is the first impression guests have of your home, and it sets the tone for the rooms beyond. A confident wallpaper can make even a modest entrance feel individual and thoughtfully designed.
When choosing a bold wallpaper for a hallway, consider the colours already present in adjoining rooms. Repeating one or two shades in the woodwork, lighting or accessories helps the spaces feel connected.
You can also introduce contrasting colours through smaller details, such as a (rechargeable) wall light, a painted door or a favourite piece of artwork. These accents bring depth to the scheme without requiring every element to follow the same rules. I plan to add more artwork and pressed flowers in a frame to this wall, but I’d like to take my time with that. By the way, the Australian Robin canvas has a job, apart from being pretty and unique, it hides our thermostat! (Our thermostat is quite thick so I got a deep 4cm mini canvas printed to hide it).

And don’t forget the ceiling. Carrying colour overhead can make the whole space feel more immersive, creating a complete design rather than simply decorating the walls.
Colour is a design choice, not a compromise
There is a tendency to associate elegance with neutral palettes: soft whites, understated beiges and gentle natural tones. These colours certainly have their place, but they are not the only route to a sophisticated interior.
A considered colour scheme can be just as timeless. Deep greens, vibrant pinks and rich blues can create rooms that feel personal, confident and beautifully put together. If you are unsure of the pink element, you could opt for burgundy instead, it’s an equally beautiful option.
The difference lies in the intention behind the choices
Colour needs room to breathe. Patterns need to work together. Decorative objects should feel collected rather than simply coordinated. And a room should reflect the people who live in it, rather than following a formula.
This is particularly important to me at Réka Thornton designs. I design wallpaper and fabrics for people who love colour and pattern, but who also want their homes to feel elegant, individual and enduring.
Paradiso embodies that approach. Its chartreuse colourway brings energy and freshness to a space, while its pattern gives the walls depth and character. It can be used to create a bold entrance, add personality to a staircase or bring an unexpected twist to a smaller room.
A home that feels like you
Looking at my hallway, I am reminded that decorating should be an enjoyable process of discovery. It is about finding combinations that excite you, bringing together pieces you love and having the confidence to trust your own eye.
Not every home needs a bold ceiling or cerise-pink doors. But every home benefits from a little individuality.
For me, the most elegant interiors are those that feel considered without feeling overly controlled. They have a sense of balance, but they also have a point of view. They embrace beautiful materials, thoughtful details and, above all, personality.
Because colour isn’t something to be afraid of when creating an elegant home. Used with care, it’s what makes the home unforgettable.
My Paradiso wallpaper also comes in other beautiful colours to bring character and confidence to your walls. Explore the options now and don’t forget to show me the outcome!
